A moment in time - Kurdistan, 2

There are moments that surprise me with their surreal and inexplicable beauty.

Such as when, on the mountains, there is a black sky that is heavy with rain and hail.

Cold feet try not to slip on the insidious mud.

The houses all around are built with a mixture of rammed earth and leftovers of weapons: the curled tip of a Katyusha rocket not too far from my left ear.

The panorama opens up in a succession of snow-capped mountain tops and minefields.

Strong wind gusts make me lose balance.

And an ex peshmerga proudly looks at me and starts singing a passage from a Verdi opera.

Kurdistan, 20 months later

It is the feeling of a strange homecoming.
The sky turns yellow in preparation to the upcoming sand storm.
The scent of sesame and flour of the samun, the romboide-shaped bread, just taken out of the wood oven by hands that are hardened by the heat.
The taste of mulberry syrup mixed with butter and walnuts and that of the sweet tea that seems to be boiling for a hours.
The prayer beads that run through your fingers and take away the heavy thoughts.
The graveyards on the mountains with a big tree and a view wide open to the valley.
The traumas of the past that find mysterious ways to survive in the present.
The power of stories that hook you and keep you listening, overwhelmed by the  cruelty of human beings as much as by their capability to resist and move on.

Falling in Love with an Idea and Making it a Thing

You run your fingers against your cowlicks

And explain to me what it means to

Love Everything: Corrupted Love

Now your hair vacillates between Nature

And Art: Time, the great bear, will make his

Entry and Exit upon whim and your

Hair and your Argument will rest, constant.

Big Love: of Big Things, Large Ideas

Of Grand Scales and Everything, is Love-

Corrupted: The Great Bear is but made up

of its parts, every strand of fur, every star

Irreverent to detail, you turn

Crumbs into metaphors, magnifying a molecule.

I pray you: Let little things be-little.

Offensive Hand Gestures When Traveling

Nearly everyone all over the globe knows that flashing the middle finger is meant as a huge insult to the recipient. However, many common hand gestures which are perfectly innocent in the US are in fact quite dangerous in other parts of the world. Here are seven of the most hazardous ones:
